Displaying and looking after a collection
When the fridge door runs out of space
Once a collection outgrows the door, the practical option is a dedicated magnetic surface elsewhere: a sheet of galvanised steel screwed to a wall, a magnetic whiteboard mounted for the purpose, or a length of steel strip fixed along a shelf edge. Any of these works because the magnet does not care what shape the steel is in, only that it is ferritic steel, the magnetic kind used in most fridge doors and worktops. Magnetic paint, which suspends iron particles in the paint film, is the weakest option and will usually hold a single printed laminate magnet but not a heavier cast metal or resin one. Position the board away from a radiator or a south-facing window, since heat and direct sun affect the collection faster than the fridge door ever does.
Cleaning by material
How a souvenir magnet should be cleaned depends on what it is made of, and treating them all the same way is the most common cause of damage. The construction of the piece, covered in the earlier section on souvenir magnet materials, decides which cleaning method is safe.
- Resin magnets have a clear domed coating that scratches easily. A damp cloth is enough; abrasive sponges and kitchen sprays dull the gloss over time.
- Ceramic pieces have a fired glaze that tolerates most household cleaners without harm, since the glaze is the same finish used on tiles and crockery.
- Cast metal magnets should be wiped dry. Water that gets behind the casting and sits against the magnet or its backing plate can start surface rust.
- Wood magnets take a damp cloth at most. Soaking lifts the varnish and can warp a thin wooden blank.
- Printed laminate magnets are a paper or card print sealed under a plastic film. Solvent-based cleaners get under the edge of that film and lift it, so a damp cloth is the safer choice here too.
Colour fading from sunlight
Printed inks and coloured resins fade under sustained ultraviolet exposure, which is why a magnet kept on a sunny windowsill loses its colour faster than one on the fridge door itself. A window ledge typically gets several hours of direct sun a day; a fridge door, unless it faces a window, gets very little. There is no published lightfastness standard specific to souvenir fridge magnets, so the practical rule is simply to keep a collection out of direct sun.
Loose magnets and peeling prints
The two failures that turn up most often are a magnet disc that has come away from its backing and a printed laminate whose film has started to lift at the corner. A loose magnet disc can usually be re-glued with a strong general-purpose adhesive rated for metal and plastic; ordinary cyanoacrylate (superglue) will often hold too, but it sets rigid and can fail again once the magnet is repeatedly flexed against a curved fridge door. A lifting laminate is harder to fix properly: once air and moisture get under the film, the print underneath starts to discolour, and resealing the edge only delays the same problem. At that point, it is usually a case of accepting the piece as it is.
