Why neodymium magnets are dangerous in a way other magnets are not

Neodymium magnets (chemical shorthand NdFeB, for neodymium-iron-boron) are the strongest magnetic material sold to the public, and that raw strength is what turns an ordinary swallowed object into a specific hazard. A single magnet swallowed on its own cannot attract anything on the far side of the gut wall, because there is nothing magnetic for it to pull against once it is inside the body. The hazard begins the moment a second magnet, or another magnetic metal object, is present in the digestive system at the same time.

Why two magnets are worse than one

If two magnets are swallowed separately, whether minutes apart or in different loops of the same swallow, they can find each other through the wall of the gut. The tissue caught between two attracting poles is pinched, and the pressure cuts off its blood supply. Left in place, that tissue dies, and the bowel wall can perforate. That is why this injury is treated as a surgical emergency.

Why size is not the safety measure

A small neodymium magnet can carry a pull force, the measured attraction between a magnet and a steel surface, out of all proportion to its size, because the material's field strength per gram is far higher than hard ferrite or a flexible magnetic sheet of the same dimensions. A magnet the size of a pea can be strong enough to clamp through two layers of bowel wall, so a small diameter tells you nothing useful about the risk. Pull force is rarely printed on the packaging of loose craft or novelty magnets, which is why the size of the object is a poor guide to how dangerous it is.

Where the risk actually sits

The items most often involved are small, strong magnets sold loose or in sets: craft magnets, magnetic building pieces, and the tiny magnets sometimes fitted into novelty items and jewellery. A single printed fridge magnet, of the kind described in What a Fridge Magnet Is Made Of, and Which Kind You Are Buying, is a lower risk on its own because it is usually one piece and too large to swallow whole. Any product supplied as several small, separate magnets should be treated as a multiple-magnet hazard from the outset, regardless of how small each individual piece looks.

The UK regulatory position on small magnets

The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) is the UK national regulator responsible for consumer product safety, including small strong magnets sold as toys or as components of toys. Local Trading Standards teams carry out enforcement, including test purchases and product recalls, and are the body to contact if a magnetic product on sale in the UK appears not to meet the required standard.

Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011 and EN 71

The Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011 apply to any item marketed, or reasonably intended for use, as a toy by a child under 14. Where a product falls within scope, it must meet the mechanical and physical safety requirements set out in EN 71-1, which includes specific tests for magnetic parts: whether a small magnet can be removed by a child using normal force, and whether the field strength of any removable magnet exceeds a set threshold, known as the magnetic flux index. The exact numerical threshold is set out in the standard itself, so confirm the current figure directly with BSI or with OPSS.

Markings to look for

A toy that meets these requirements should carry a CE mark (and, since UK-market rules diverged after EU exit, in many cases a UKCA mark as well), along with a declaration of conformity that the manufacturer or importer is required to hold. Age warnings and choking hazard triangles, such as a small-parts warning stating a minimum age, are mandatory wherever the toy safety assessment identifies a risk. Their absence on a product marketed at young children is itself a signal worth reporting to Trading Standards.

When a fridge magnet is not a toy

Most promotional fridge magnets, the kind ordered by takeaways, tradespeople, estate agents and schools, are not toys under this regime. They are marketed and sold as household or promotional items for adults, so the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011 do not apply to them, and they fall instead under the general consumer product safety framework enforced by OPSS and Trading Standards. That distinction matters for anyone ordering these in bulk: the safety obligation shifts from toy-specific testing to the general duty not to place a dangerous product on the market, and any magnetic toy sold or given away alongside a promotional item, such as an alphabet magnet set aimed at children, brings the stricter toy rules back into play. What should you do if a child has swallowed a magnet?

If a child has swallowed a magnet, or you think they might have, call 999 or NHS 111 without delay and tell the call handler exactly what was swallowed. Say how many magnets were involved if you know, whether any other small metal object such as a coin or a watch battery could have gone down with it, and roughly when it happened.

Why more than one magnet changes the risk

A single magnet swallowed on its own usually passes through the digestive system in the ordinary way. Two or more magnets swallowed separately, or a magnet swallowed alongside another metal object, can pull towards each other from opposite sides of the intestinal wall. The tissue caught between them can be pinched or torn, and that is a surgical emergency.

What the call handler needs to know

  • What was swallowed: a fridge magnet, a magnetic toy piece, a magnetic clasp
  • How many separate pieces, if that is known
  • Roughly when it happened
  • Any symptoms already showing, such as vomiting, stomach pain or refusing food

The NHS publishes guidance on swallowed foreign objects, including magnets, which sets out when to call 999, when to use NHS 111, and when to go straight to A&E. Follow that guidance directly rather than waiting to see whether symptoms appear.

Storage and disposal

Storage means keeping any magnet strong enough to snap together with force somewhere a child or pet cannot get at it. A packet of loose neodymium magnets left in a drawer, a pencil case or a toy box is still within reach of a toddler who opens drawers, and a magnet that has come apart from a fridge magnet, a toy or a fidget set behaves the same way as one bought loose. The safest place for spares and sets you are not using is a closed container on a shelf a small child cannot climb to, kept separately from any food storage area a pet might investigate.

Why loose magnets are riskier than fixed ones

A magnet fixed inside a toy, a whiteboard eraser or a fridge magnet's backing is doing a specific job and is unlikely to migrate. A loose magnet, or one that has fallen out of its casing, has no job left to do and nothing stopping a child from picking it up, mouthing it or swallowing it. Neodymium magnets in particular can leap several centimetres to snap onto steel or onto each other, which is exactly the behaviour that makes a set of small magnets pinch a small hand, and exactly the behaviour that makes a swallowed pair dangerous once separated inside the body. If a magnetic toy or set is missing a piece, treat that piece as loose and go looking for it before assuming it has simply rolled under the sofa.

Disposing of neodymium magnets

Neodymium magnets should not go into a general household waste bin loose. They can attract to other metal in the waste stream, they can damage the magnetic separators used at recycling and waste facilities, and a magnet forced apart or crushed in a bin lorry can shatter, since the material is brittle. Tape a set together, or seal it inside a solid container, before it leaves the house, and check with your local council on whether it should go to a household waste recycling centre, since practice varies between councils. Hard ferrite magnets, the grey ceramic type used in most basic fridge magnets, are far less prone to snapping together with force, but small pieces are still a choking hazard and are worth disposing of the same way.
